What does a Project Manager do?

What is a Project Manager and what does a Project Manager do?

A Project Manager’s role will differ based upon the size, nature, complexity and the industry in which the project is being implemented.  However in broad terms a Project Manager is responsible for the successful implementation of the project to achieve agreed objectives.

In larger projects a Project Manager may only be responsible for the overall coordination of a team of technical experts, whilst in smaller projects the Project Manager may actually perform the technical work.

Whilst in the latter scenario (small projects) it is expected that the project manager have the technical skills, there is much debate which surrounds this issue; as the argument is often made that a Project Manager with strong Project Management skills is a far better asset than one with strong technical skills.
