This two hour program involves the skills and knowledge required to shift loads using manual handling methods, including assessing the risks associated with transferring a patient, planning the task and working within a team using specialised manual techniques . The manual handling program has been specifically designed by our in-house Physiotherapist to teach Curtin University Nursing & Midwifery students how to safely move and manipulate loads within their workplace. All participants will also receive learning resources for ongoing referral.
Recommended Outcomes
– Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety and legislative requirements
– Risk identification and injury prevention
– Body biomechanics and basic anatomy
– Manual Handling principles and transfer techniques (rolling, sit – stand, ambulation with aids)
– Use of mechanical aids (hoists)
– Identifying and correcting common postural misalignments
– Practical assessment of manual handling tasks

Students are deemed competent following assessment of theoretical concepts and observation of correct
manual handling techniques in a workplace task. Students must obtain a grade of 80% or greater to be
deemed competent
